FD Visual Culture: Theory and Practice

Visual Culture: Theory and Practice is aimed at students who wish to work in the creative industries as writers, journalists, curators, educators, project managers and community workers.

This is a unique opportunity to study the cultural sector, and the impact of culture on places, communities and individuals, from a range of perspectives. The modules focus on historical, theoretical, thematic, vocational and practical approaches and skills.

The ethos of the course is to foster criticality and debate around issues in visual culture. It is delivered within an art school and draws on the experience of Hull’s tenure as City of Culture. There are exciting opportunities for collaboration and sharing of practice within a wider community of creative and intellectual endeavour. Students will have access to studio and workshop facilities and the course will draw on links with local organisations such as galleries, schools, and community arts programmes.

In the first year, students will be introduced to historical and theoretical frameworks and given the opportunity to develop practical studio based skills. Second year students will be introduced to potential employment areas, undertake work experience and case studies. Alongside this, associated issues and questions will be examined; such as regeneration, gentrification, place identity and funding. This will be developed in the third year when students plan and deliver a professional/live project; alongside other core modules at this level.
